Magic is full of lies and yet in order to present it properly one must find an absolute TRUTH in every action or idea. One must be true to one's self or the character one is potraying. No Matter how ridiculous the character or the lie, the audience will see through it if there is no illusion of truth. You have to 'believe it yourself' if you follow me.
Never underestimate the power of truth in performance. I know that this seems like a contradiction to what I have just said but try and find a way to maintain the pretense of integrity in everything you play. This is why Mis- Calling cards works so well. I will write a whole essay about Mis-Calling soon as I think it is most important. It is a downright lie but it is presented as a completly HONEST action. One is REMINDING oneself what the card is. One is admitting to having forgotten. One is lying within a veil of truth. The only way it will work is if one believes ones own crap. Mis-calling is a greatly under used subtelty, yet one which can take an effect to the next level. It's a little thing but it's the little things that count big in the long term right?.

When I was a kid I told my sister it was OK to put her tongue on a live 9 Volt battery. I knew it wasn't OK but I had conviction. I showed truth and honesy in my performnace and she fell for it. She was 3 at the time BTW and has never forgiven me. Sorry Emma.
Do yourself a favour. Try and believe every trick. Deny the dirty work. See how far you can push it. Be natural. Be honest. It pays off.
